Drishyam is movie about Vijay Salgaokar (Ajay Devgn), a simple, 4th fail, villager who runs a cable network in the village and has gained knowledge and become smart (actually very smart) by watching movies. His family consists of his wife and 2 daughters. A self made man and very respected in the village. He is faced with a life changing situation and he has to use his imagination and creates an imagery to save his family.
Vijay is at odds with a corrupt inspector in the village and helps villagers to save themselves from his corrupt ways. The elder daughter is adopted, after finding her in a garbage bin, just to add to his credentials – of being a respectable guy
But with certain change of events and unavoidable circumstances the family has become the key link and eventually the prime suspects in the case of the missing son (Sameer aka Sam) of IG-Police of Goa.
The boy (Sam) is blackmailing the elder daughter with a video of her bathing, shot at a school camp. And the mother and daughter in an attempt to get the video, kill the boy, by accident and bury him in their garden. Now Ajay Devgn despite been the law abiding and a good guy decides to cover up the act and save his family, for him family always comes above all else – good or bad.
Now he is out deleting the trail of the day the boy goes missing/ killed and create new trails and visuals with enough proofs and witnesses for an alibi for his family being not in town for those 2 days. And the alibi prepared by Vijay is fool proof and water tight.
The police after some time realize, that the story is false, just because of the fool proof-ness of the story. And all witnesses and proofs so perfectly coordinated.
Will the police eventually foil the plot or Vijay manages to hide the story and convince everyone of the drishyam that he has created?
The story is very gripping and the screenplay is good. The whole movie you have a fear in your heart and beating fast. It reminds you of the time when you were too scared of getting caught by friends, parents, teachers for the wrongs you did.
But the whole story revolves around proving if the Salgaonkar family is in town on the day the boy goes missing. As if that is the only thing to prove and if proved, then they are guilty. A little shallow in there. After a little while you just seem to think this whole idea is getting too much and repetitive.
But the end is good and the build up to the end is good too.
Ajay Devgn gives a great performance. Very nuanced and intense. Shriya Saran as wife is very pretty and does well too. The kids have done a decent job as well. The character playing Inspector Gaitonde is high impact. Tabu in a significant and influential role, does well as expected. But the angst of a woman with a lost son somehow does not come out as well, except in the last scene in the movie.
Background music is good and so is the cinematography in picturesque Goa. Wish there were more outdoor scenes.
Watch it guys, you will enjoy it…!!!
