Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – Mushkil decision to make

Spoilers Ahead

After all the controversies and the anarchy and some forced patriotic submissions and some obligatory donations, the movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) did release this Diwali.

Karan Johar tries his adroitness in answering the antiquated question ‘Kya ek ladka aur ladki kabhi dost ho sakte hai’ (Can a boy and a girl can only be friends?). The story has a boy, Ayaan (Ranbir Kapoor) son of a very very rich father pursuing his MBA in London and loves to sing; and a girl, Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) from Lucknow now staying in London and doing some courses here. They meet one night on a bar-hopping spree, and eventually become close after their individual partners cheat with them on a double date.

Singing, dancing, partying vacationing together Ayaan falls in love with Alizeh. But Alizeh thinks of him no more than a bestest best friend. He is friend zoned, but hopes to turn around their friendship in to love. But Alizeh loves a guy from college, Ali (Fawad Khan). Ali does not care much for her love and she is living with a broken heart, resigned to destiny and determined to move on. But a chance meeting with Ali in Paris, reignites some old sparks and Alizeh wants to be with Ali again.  And eventually they decide to get married. On the day of her marriage, Ayaan does confess his love to Alizeh, and the pain of losing her, but she just can’t love him any other way, then just being friends.

Then what is Aishwarya doing in the movie? She is a divorcee, a poetess and very hot, Saba. She meets Ayaan on his return journey from India. Her poetry is soothing, wounded Ayaan. And gives a patient hearing to his love woes. She gets to bed the charming boy, in return. Ayaan tries to forget Alizeh with the graceful and beautiful Saba, but in vain. Slowly she falls in loves with Ayaan, but knows that Ayaan pines for only Alizeh. And calls off the relation. Our lovelorn boy now puts all his energy and emotions into singing and becomes a singing sensation.

Does he ever meet Alizeh again. Is Alizeh able to love him the way he wants, though she thinks what they share is more than any relation she has with anyone.

But love needs love and friendship fears that love will destroy it.

Anyone who has ever been in a situation where your friend loves you, or you ever loved your best friend, would just know of this dilemma.  But invariably in real life, these relations just fade away with time and the memories remain of once upon a time.

The production of the film is of high standards- vast canvass, wide camera angles, exquisite clothes, rich colours and shot on location. The music of the movie is one of its biggest plus. Karan Johar is known to have ear for great music and he shoots songs really well. Arjit is amazing and puts his soul in the songs.

The movie is a little chaotic in the first half and seems to be going haywire. A little slack and a few scenes are in poor taste. The second half returns a little semblance of sanity. The direction is good in parts, some scenes are superb, some very shoddy. Ayaan’s stubbornness to be loved, gets on you after a while. We just want the guy to move on. The story is thin, and Karan Johar has ran out of ideas. Way too much reference to his other movies and Yash Raj movies. Every clichéd dialog of bollywood is used in the movie and after a while you crave for originality.

Ranbir is excellent in the movie. Anushka is good too. Fawad is wasted- does not even have 2 scenes in the movie, may be his role got edited after the controversy. Aishwarya is good too- I find her very plastic otherwise, but here she is much better.

Should you watch it- No

Yes- Only if you ever found yourself in a situation of love vs friendship, would you relate.
